An elderly couple remain in a serious condition in hospital following a single-vehicle crash that closed the the A30 on Saturday.

Police and emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway near Indian Queens, Newquay around 5pm after a red Citroen Xsara Picasso rolled over several times and came to rest on its roof.

The driver, a 70-year-old woman, and an 88-year-old male passenger, sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to Derriford Hospital by the police helicopter and air ambulance.

The couple, who are from Bolton, remain in hospital. The woman is receiving treatment for life changing injuries and the man sustained life threatening head injuries.

The westbound carriageway was closed for six-and-a-half hours for officers from the Force Serious Collisions Investigation Unit to conduct a forensic examination of the scene.

The A30 was also closed in both directions for a short time for the helicopters to land and safely evacuate the casualties.
