Work is 'progressing well' on Newlyn Green and Bolitho Gardens sea wall repairs, says Cornwall Council.

The foundation for the Newlyn Green sea wall is all but complete and works are taking place on the construction of the main wall. Construction of a new concrete wall at the Bolitho Gardens section is well underway and granite from the old masonry wall will be salvaged and used to face the new wall at Newlyn Green.

"Very poor ground conditions" at Newlyn Green has meant that deeper excavations have been required to found the wall on solid material. This has caused some delays with over 300m3 of concrete being placed in a new foundation.

CORMAC has said it expects to recover any lost time over the next two weeks.

A council spokesman said that the project has "challenging completions dates" and "every effort is being made to maintain the programme in readiness for the summer events".

Adding: "These deep excavations and general construction activity throughout the site has led to the erection of some additional security fencing. This protects those using the local area, particularly children in the play park, from the dangers of the work site and its extent will be regularly reviewed as work progresses.

"Concrete lorries will be crossing the ‘Green’ on a daily basis for the next eight weeks and plant vehicles will also be accessing the promenade end by the disabled parking bays. Residents and visitors are urged to use their common sense when using the area.

Ian Newby, CORMAC senior project manager said: “We are delighted that local residents and stakeholders have engaged with us to bring both of these construction phases to this stage. We are maximising the good weather which has helped progress and we hope it continues’’.

Jim McKenna and Roger Harding, the two local Cornwall Councillors, have been closely involved in the project and said “We are very pleased at the rate of progress and the way in which CORMAC are managing the works, particularly how local feedback has been taken into account in the planning and delivery of the project. A regular “drop in” meeting is held at Tolcarne Motors every Friday at noon and any local residents are welcome to attend to discuss any aspect of the work”.
