Two people in Redruth have had a lucky escape after being pulled from a smoke filled flat on fire.

Firefighters were called to the ground floor flat on Chapel Street, Redruth just before 4am this morning.

Two appliances were sent to the fire and found a number of the people from the flats outside because of an alarm sounding.

A message was relayed to Fire Control that there were people unaccounted for and another fire engine was despatched.

A fire and rescue spokesman said: "Crews wearing breathing apparatus dealt with the fire and carried out a search of the premises to locate any occupants who were unaccounted for, further breathing apparatus crews were deployed and as a result, two occupants were rescued from the premises.

"A number of the occupants were treated by Ambulance crews for smoke inhalation however, all occupants were allowed back into their homes."

An investigation into the cause of the fire will be carried out later this morning.
