A downed paraglider was rescued from the sea by a crew of RNLI volunteers at the weekend.

Newquay RNLI lifeboat volunteers were paged by Falmouth Coastguard at 3.03pm on Sunday, June 22, after a man ditched in to the water between Fistral Beach and East Pentire.

The man and his daughter, who had gone in to the water to help her father, were rescued by RNLI lifeguards from Fistral Beach and the lifeboat volunteers assisted a local dive boat with recovery of kit from the area.

An RNLI spokesperson said: "The man was paragliding near the Lewinnick Lodge when he ditched in to the sea about 50 yards offshore. His daughter who was filming him from nearby rocks went in to the water to help her father and the emergency services were alerted.

"Newquay RNLI lifeboat volunteers responded in the charity’s two inshore lifeboats from the harbour, RNLI lifeguards from nearby Fistral Beach responded on board their rescue water-craft and shore-based coastguard volunteers were also alerted.

"The RNLI lifeguards from Fistral were quickly with the father and daughter and recovered them uninjured from the water before landing them safely ashore at Fistral Beach. Meanwhile, the RNLI lifeboat crews recovered the daughter’s possessions from the rocks and a local dive boat retrieved the glider kit from the sea."

The very grateful daughter and her mother came to the lifeboat station to collect the retrieved kit and thank the RNLI teams for their response.
