A new display of Cornwall’s treasures, including hoards of Roman gold and items from the Bronze Age will go on show at the Royal Cornwall Museum on July 21.

The display of has possible by a significant grant from the Art Fund, supported by The Headley Trust, through their Treasure Plus funding programme.

The Treasure Plus grant has enabled Royal Cornwall Museum to conserve and display a late Bronze Age metalworker’s hoard found in St Buryan parish and a hoard of Roman coins found in Luxulyan parish.

The display will also include a Bronze Age gold twisted torc (neck ring), bronze axes and a bronze razor; a unique Iron Age coin from Brittany; Roman gold jewellery and bronze brooches; Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup strap mounts; a Medieval silver seal matrix; a rare Medieval silver piedfort or reckoning counter and Post-medieval silver gilt dress hooks.

Anna Tyacke, the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) finds liaison officer for Cornwall, based at the Royal Cornwall Museum, said: "Many thousands of artefacts have been brought to me by members of the public to record on to the PAS database. The finds have been recovered from the ground in a variety of different ways, including metal detecting, gardening or even whilst walking the dog on the beach or coastal path.

"Several of the objects are made of precious metals but all of the finds, including the base metalwork, pottery, glass, flint and stone implements, are valuable for the contribution that they make to our understanding of Cornwall’s past.

"I am delighted that, thanks to the Art Fund’s Treasure Plus funding programme, we are now able to conserve and display some of these finds for visitors to the Royal Cornwall Museum to enjoy.”
