Students from Cornwall College Camborne have been asked to use their travel and tourism skills, helping the public during The Tall Ships Regatta, the largest maritime event to be held in the South West this year.

Following the college’s successful participation in the 2008 regatta, Cornwall Development Company approached the college to be involved again with this year’s event.

Anna Druce, festival and events co-ordinator at Cornwall Development Company, said: “We have partnered up again with Cornwall College travel and tourism students, with the opportunity of being part of a huge team of volunteers supporting the Tall Ships Regatta in Falmouth.

“They will support a 100 strong team of volunteers recruited by Volunteer Cornwall and will carry out a wide variety of roles and on the Parade of Sail day, they will be assisting at the VIP reception for event partners and sponsors at Pendennis Castle.”

Suzette Sadler, travel and tourism course manager, added: “As part of the course the students complete an events unit which links in really well with the regatta and we try to give the students as much practical experience as possible to really bring the career to life.

“We have a long standing relationship working with Visit Cornwall and we even worked on the previous Tall Ships event in 2008, which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved.”

Student Sophie Allen said: “We’ll be volunteering in Falmouth town making sure that everyone has a great time and help the event be a huge success, we’re all very excited to be involved and looking forward to the regatta. We cover a lot of different units on the travel and tourism course and being involved in something like this allows you to put into practice what you learn.”

Andy Brelsford, support and development manager at Volunteer Cornwall, added: “Volunteers are crucial in contributing to the safe and successful running of the Tall Ships Regatta. Many of the roles are now filled, however we are keen to hear from people who would be available to help with traffic management in and around Falmouth from Thursday to Sunday and people available for evening shifts in the Docks from Thursday to Saturday. You will experience being directly involved in this really exciting event.”
