A Falmouth pensioner’s support of Cornwall Hospice Care’s lottery and raffles has paid off after Margaret Butcher scooped the £2,000 top prize in the charity’s super summer draw.

Margaret, who lives in Boslowick Road, popped into her local Cornwall Hospice Care shop yesterday (July 1) to collect her winnings which were presented to her, along with a colourful bouquet, by the charity’s lottery manager, Sarah Vincent.

The widow admitted she had been shocked to receive the call informing her of her windfall. “I never win anything big, just the odd £5 or £10,” she said. “I do the lottery every week and when they send me the raffle tickets I never sell them, but buy them all myself. I could not believe it when they told me I had been drawn out first.”

Asked what she was going to spend the money on, she said: “I haven’t made my mind up yet, but I am going to go to the golf club for lunch with a friend to celebrate.”

Lottery manager Sarah said Cornwall Hospice Care holds super draws in the summer and at Christmas which boast prizes of £2,000, £500, £250 and ten of £25. The latest fundraiser has generated over £32,000 in just eight weeks.

“It is fantastic for us to be able to give away that amount in prizes and still raise so much for hospice care,” she said.
