Rescuers from Falmouth Coastguard were called to help a young girl with a possible spinal injury from diving into shallow water at Gyllyngvase Beach at the weekend.

The coastguard rescue team attended Gyllyngvase Beach on Sunday at around 12.45pm after reports that the 12-year-old had hurt herself when she hit the sea bed after diving in.

A spokesperson said: “Once on scene the lifeguard had already placed the casualty on a spine board but required further assistance.

“We applied a stiff neck collar to immobilise the casualty for assessment by the off duty paramedic and community first responder also having arrived on scene.

“Ambulance control had initially requested Cornwall Air Ambulance to attend, so we also had to clear the west end of the beach to accommodate a helicopter landing site.”

The casualty was transferred to an ambulance when it arrived, and the air ambulance was stood down.
