The organisers of Mawnan Christmas Lights took a ‘self-raising’ approach to funding when they organised a baking competition at the weekend.

The first Great Mawnan Bake Off held at the Memorial Hall tried to include as many villagers as possible across all ages and abilities, with classes starting at the under 12 age group.

Penny Salisbury from the Mawnan Christmas Lights committee, who organised the event, said: “The first Great Mawnan Bake Off competition was well supported, and produced quite a ‘buzz’ around the village. It is always difficult to know what to do to raise funds for the village Christmas Lights in a fun and imaginative way, trying to include as many residents as possible, of all ages and abilities.”

She said of the under 12 group: “A lot of hard work and imagination had gone into their entries - so a very special thank you to all of them. Their entries were exceptional.

Grant Mather, from Cornwall College, acted as judge for the bakers and there was a coffee morning and bacon butties, along with a raffle, which all helped raise funds for the Christmas display.

Penny added: “Thank you to all those who supported us - we’re doing it again next year.”
