Possible councillors of the future joined the mayor of Helston on Tuesday last week as part of a “youth engagement” event.

A total of 14 pupils from three Helston primary schools, Parc Eglos, St Michael’s and Nansloe Academy, along with their teachers, joined the mayor and mayoress Mike and Briege Thomas.

Other staff from Helston Town Council were also involved in the evening, which featured a number of activities to get |the chidren involved and engaged with |the council.

The years four, five and six children took part in a quiz and word search session and were treated to ice cream sundaes.

They were also involved in a debate on the topic “Helston town centre would benefit from the provision of play spaces similar to those in Redruth”.

The majority decision was that Helston would benefit from similar spaces, so that parents would know where their children were when they went out to play with friends.

The town council has agreed to take into account these ideas when discussing the topic of play spaces.

Mr Thomas said: “It was a very successful evening and great to keep up communications between the school and the council. It was also very encouraging to see the parents come and listen to their children take part in the debate.”
