A new children’s author who hopes to share her love of Cornwall through her book will be opening improved facilities at Mullion Nursery this Saturday.

Jenny Steele Scolding, from Cadgwith, will be cutting a ribbon to officially unveil the renovated garden and two new rooms at the nursery, based in the village’s YMCA building, at an open day between 10am and noon.

She will also be signing copies of her new book, Percy Pengelly and the Wibble-Wobble, which is aimed at four to seven-year-olds.

Illustrated by Andy McPherson, a film animator and pencil artist for Disney who used to live at Lizard Point, it tells the story of Percy Pengelly, a daring Cornish tightrope walker who hopes to find work using his balancing skills after saying goodbye to the circus. After trying his hand at all kinds of jobs, he settles for life as a chimney sweep.

Jenny has threaded the story with Cornish characters and events, from seagull attacks to a lifeboat rescue.

She said: “I first fell in love with Cornwall during childhood holidays to Polperro, but this is the first time I have turned my love of Cornwall into a story for children.”

It is by no means her first foray into literature, however.

The retired film and television researcher wrote and published a Guide to Cornish Fish in 2012, and has also written six monologues performed in London theatres. In 2003 she was awarded a writer’s residency at Fundacion Valparaiso in Spain.

She now works with her husband, graphic designer Bill Scolding, writing copy for tourist publications.

The couple have two grown up children, Gwen and Jake, who grew up in Cadgwith.

Designed and published by Serpentine Design, Percy Pengelly and the Wibble-Wobble is available now in Waterstones, Truro, and other bookshops throughout Cornwall, as well as on Amazon and other websites, priced £6.99.
