The power of the pound was proven on Monday when youngsters at Porthleven School were presented with a cheque for £1,000.

This came from Ali Calvert, the organiser of the Power of the Pound fundraising event held partly in support of the school, as well as for the Mariama Mae School that she founded in the Gambia.

The event raised £2,500 through a three-day fundraiser in Porthleven, which included a family fun day and live music.

Businesses and families were also encouraged to place pound coins around the Harbour Head.

Ali, who works at the port,s Costcutter, said at the time: “I’d really like to thank all the local people for donating their pounds,” also giving her appreciation to the entertainers who gave their time for free and the musicians from Out Of The Blue.

On Monday Ali visited the school to present its share of the money to pupils and headteacher Duncan Ratcliffe.

A school spokesperson said: “Thank you to Ali and everyone who supported it and helped raise the money.”
