Helston and Lizard schools band together for first summer fete: PICTURES

Held at Helston Community College, the event was organised by the trust’s school council, SKIP (School Kids in Partnership), representing more than 4,000 children and young people.

It featured a range of activities, including tombolas, cake stalls, nail-painting, a bouncy castle, wet-sponge throwing and throwing wellington boots at targets for the chance to win an iTunes voucher. There were also hot dogs for sale.

The weather held out for the event, meaning that it could be held on the school field as was initially hoped.

One-third of the money raised from the fete will be divided between the Mustard Seed’s Food Bank and Cancer Research UK, which were chosen by the pupils as the trust’s local and national charities to support over the course of the current academic year.

The remaining funds will be divided equally between individual schools and the co-operative school council, and will be spent upon further joint projects in the future.

It has not yet been decided whether a fete will be held next year, as this will be a matter for the newly-elected co-operative school council members to consider at a future date.

Current council chairman Frazer Delves, from Helston Community College, who will be stepping aside from the post later this month, said: “I hope the summer fete offers a positive reflection of what children and young people from local schools can achieve when we really put our minds to it.

“I am very proud of all of the pupils who volunteered at this event, and would also like to thank the staff for their support.

“A special thanks to Dr Pat McGovern, Nigel East, Mick Baker and the caretaking team at Helston Community College, for agreeing to host the event.”
