New Falmouth mayor, John Body, took a tour of Falmouth Day Centre after announcing he had chosen it as his mayoral charity for the year.

Mr Body and his wife Linda met clients, staff and volunteers of the centre in Killigrew Street when they were shown around by manager Lucy Downing, who explained the invaluable support the centre offers.

Around 90 people over 50 currently make use of the facilities from Monday to Friday. As well as offering social support for those with specific problems, the centre also provides a range of activities from bingo and quizzes to arm chair exercises and arts and crafts.

There is a kitchen on site which provides hot home-cooked meals and a minibus to collect clients and return them home.

A sensory room is currently being created thanks to funding from the Text Santa charity and Mr Body has now given his support to the a proposed new games room which will enable clients to play darts, pool, board games and the like.

Explaining his choice of charity, Mr Body said: “I wanted it to be local and I had been told of all the good work they do here. Falmouth Age UK is not part of Age UK England nor is it part of Falmouth Age Concern's befriending scheme, which operates in one of the offices upstairs, it is an independent local run charity.

“It is currently designing a new games room which I very much hope to assist with and see completed during my time in office.”

Grateful of the support, manager Lucy said: “It is lovely as it raises awareness of the day centre as much as anything else and what we offer and how we are supporting people around Falmouth.”
