As the end of the school year closed in, it was time for Helston and Lizard members of the joint school council SKIP (School Kids in Partnership) to elect their members.

The youngsters organise events and activities to benefit pupils across the Southerly Point Cooperative Trust, which covers, Helston, the Lizard Peninsula, Porthleven and into West Cornwall.

They had to say goodbye to former chairman Frazer Delves, who had served in this post for 18 months.

He said: “Not a day has gone by where I have not enjoyed the challenges and opportunities associated with the role.”

New officers were elected at the co-operative school council’s “handover” meeting last week, with students from Helston Community College, Mullion School and a selection of the primary schools taking the top spots.

Anna Broome from Helston Community College was elected new chairperson, with fellow Helston student Kate becoming vice chair.

Sam, also from the college, was made treasurer, with Charlotte from Wendron Primary School as secretary. Mullion School student Megan was elected fundraiser and Porthleven School pupils George and Daniela in charge of publicity.

Rather than leaving immediately, Frazer is going to continue to support the new officers in their roles, including Anna, in order to make sure that they all settle in well and are comfortable with what their positions entail.

Frazer said: “I am delighted with the outcome of these officer elections.”

SKIP represents the opinions of more than 4,000 young people across Helston and Lizard Peninsula, and their work will now continue with the help of the new officers.
