Carnival fever returned to Penryn for the first time in seven years, drawing a close to a festival week filled with events and activities.

The procession from Penryn Rugby Club was led by Falmouth Marine Band in Star Wars outfits, followed by mayor Gill Grant in a white stretch limo, and the fairy king and queen Rhyse Jeffery and Keeley Coggin with their retainers.

The parade also featured groups including Swamp Circus, Embrace Dance Fitness, and Daka Doum samba band, with the Penryn branch of the Royal British Legion bringing up the rear led by Lanner Silver Band.

The winner for the best costume was Lauren Griffin, Queen of Beauty, followed by Embrace Fitness and Penryn Badgers.

Councillor Mary May, one of the carnival organisers, said: “The weather was great, as was the carnival, which hadn’t been held in seven years.

“A great turn out and well supported. A great big thank you for everyone’s support, especially the children.”

The carnival marked the culmination of Penryn Week, which started with the launch of a World War One commemoration exhibition in the Temperance Hall and a Penryn Churches Together service on the quay.

There was also a children’s sports evening on College Field, two history walks, and a combined choirs ceremony with 150 people singing in remembrance of those who died in World War One, along with a fair at Penryn Infants and Junior School and a programme of events for Penryn Arts Festival.

Approximately £400 was raised by the carnival, and any organisation who would like to be considered for a donation from the funds should write to Penryn Town Council.
