Breaking with recent tradition, those taking part or visiting the annual Constantine Garden Society Summer Show were basked in sunshine as it was blessed with fine weather for the first time in several years.

The event was everything a small village show should be with plenty of exhibits, fine weather, a brass band playing, children eagerly checking their entries to see if they had won and friends and neighbours meeting up for a cup of coffee and a cream tea.

Honorary vice president Neil Wiseman thanked all those who worked so hard to make sure the show was a success, in particular the chairman Howard Bolt and his wife Valerie, the society’s minutes secretary. Mr Wiseman said: “It has been a good show, it has been a good day.”

The general feeling was that the show was the best for years, the number of new people entering the show was up and the judges all declared that the quality of the entries was very high and that the standard for the whole show was excellent, which made judging very difficult.

Gillian Lawrence the judge for the senior home produce section said: “Very good entries overall. Some of the yeast entries were outstanding” with Janet Dale, judging the cut blooms, adding: “A delight to judge such beautiful and varied classes.”

As always the children’s sections were well represented. Reg Sleaman for the children’s flowers and vegetables, said: “Thank you for making my job as a judge harder, there were some lovely flowers.”

Nicky Guest, judging the children’s arts and crafts, added: “The standard of all the children’s work was very high. I would like to commend every entry as it made the judging extremely difficult.”

The prizes were presented by the Rev Stewart Turner, vicar of Constantine, Gweek and Mawnan Smith, who was full of praise for the exhibitors, particularly the children, and said: “It was good to see the thriving community life of Constantine being taken forward by the children of the village.”
