MEMORIES were shared as former pupils and teachers of the Penrose Road Secondary School visited the building they once attended.

At the invitation of the Cornubian Arts & Science Trust, CAST, which now runs the building as an arts centre, 40 visitors were able to look into their former classrooms - now used as art studios.

Many former pupils reminisced over their time at the ‘Green School’, so called because of the colour of the uniforms, remembering where many classrooms once were and recalling with affection the teachers who taught in them The visitors recalled Betty Pascoe, who taught biology; art teachers Mr Martin and Mr Andrews; as well as Miss Moyle, the reception and needlework teacher; Mr Round who taught metalwork and technical drawing; Mr Quay who taught French; Nancy Woodman who taught needlework; Mr Weber who took woodwork and Mrs Weber who also taught needlework and PE.

Several also remembered being sat with trepidation outside Mr Harris’ office, the head teacher, and Mr Jackson in the library was also remembered with respect.

Among the visitors were two former teachers: Beatrice Kernow, who joined the school in January 1971 and taught modern languages until it closed in 1972 and the pupils moved to the comprehensive school, and Lloyd Williams, who joined straight out of teacher training college. Both were greeted with fondness by their past pupils.
