After a storm the previous day, organisers of Coverack Carnival were apprehensive - but they need not have worried.

The weather was calm and warm and the harbour buzzing throughout the event, through to when the band left at 9pm.

Liz Hanley, secretary of the Coverack Regatta and Carnival Committee, said: “Thanks to all the participants, visitors and locals it was deemed a great success. A lot of entries came from St Keverne so many thanks to them for making the evening such fun.”

The two judges Mr and Mrs Gregory, who were guests at the Bay Hotel, had a challenging task as there was a lot of support in the children's sections.

The costumes ranged from Jack, a fisherman of old, to pirates, Knights of the Round Table and even queen bees.

Some children from Coverack School dressed as Alice in Wonderland characters.

After the judging, St Keverne Band led a colourful procession from the Bay Hotel gardens past the spectators to the harbour, where the carnival queen Lily Relton, helped by carnival organiser Hugh Richards, presented the rosettes and prizes.

The band entertained the crowd who remained on the harbour enjoying the barbecue and awaiting the raffle results, while enjoying the evening sun.

Coverack School had a stall selling strawberries and cream, and Pimms, which proved popular both for taste and the cheerful bunting.

Mrs Hanley added: “The committee would like to thank those who helped to organise the event, to sell raffle tickets, man the barbecue and of course the contestants who made this year's carnival so successful and especially the Bay Hotel for allowing us to hold the event on their lawn.”
