FLUSHING Regatta Week has been hailed as a “great success” by the chairman of the event.

The fun on and off the water began with the sailing regatta, held by the Flushing Sailing Club, which included vessels ranging from yachts to working boats.

The main regatta week saw a produce and craft market, alongside a trawler race and live music on the bowling green from Stitched up and Topgallant Jack.

Animal lovers could especially enjoy activities on the bowling green, which included snail races, a small pet show and dog show. That evening a concert was held featuring international blues artist Dan Holmes and a boat trip from the ferry quay was available.

There was slippery crab catching, a street market in Coventry Road with various stalls, followed by a performance from Nankersey Male Voice Choir Concert at the Methodist chapel, and popular pub quiz was held at the Seven Stars.

Event chairman Chris Martin said: “It all went incredibly well.”

The sportier of the bunch could take part in young children’s sports events and mini marathons, one for adults and one for the junior children, and then a barbecue was held with live music from ‘The Big Sets’.

Last Friday even the rain could not dampen the regatta as “many families” still attended the beach for sandcastle competitions and a barbecue. In the evening, a concert at the St Peter’s Church presenting opera artist Vanessa and Portuguese acoustic performer Tiago entertained those who were still soggy from the day.

There was swimming races and pram races on the morning of Saturday, followed by the Grand Carnival in the evening – the event “everyone had been waiting for”, which had a “good turnout” according to Mr Martin.

Finally, on the Sunday, the Nankersey Rowing Club held a regatta for all to see.

Summing the event up, Mr Martin said that the week “went perfectly.”
