Helston Food Bank is handing out bags |containing lunches to last one child a week.

It is a pilot scheme being run by the food bank over the course of the summer.

Children who qualified were given vouchers by their schools because they received free school meals during term time and it was their main meal of the day.

Helston Food Bank covers Helston, Porthleven and the entire Lizard Peninsula.

It is open 10am to 2pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Open Door Cafe, based in the Mustard Seed in Wendron Street, opposite the Flora Cinema.

Other school-based |initiatives are in the pipeline to further the food bank’s links with schools. All schools in the area have food bank vouchers for the regular family food boxes.

Co-ordinator Ruth McGurk said: “We are keen to build our relationships with schools.

“We are able to fulfil these initiatives due solely to the continued generosity of our local churches, organisations and |members of the public.”
