RNLI lifeguards at Praa Sands have helped a man who fell from his kayak and was struggling to get back aboard.

Alex Wake and Jowan Grant were on duty at the beach when they spotted a kayak overturn at about 1pm last Friday.

Three people had fallen off – two children and one adult. At the time there was little surf, but a fairly strong cross shore wind which meant the kayak was drifting.

Alex and Jowan launched their inshore rescue boat, Joyce, and made their way to the family. By this point the two children were back onboard but the man was still struggling.

Other kayakers in the area had come over to help, and between them and the lifeguards, they held the kayak still and helped the man back onto it.

RNLI lifeguard supervisor Adam Harris said: “The family were all wearing buoyancy aids and after the kayak capsized the children got back onboard fairly quickly, but the man was unable to.

“Members of the public who were out on their kayaks went over to help and they and Alex held the kayak still while Jowan helped the man. The lifeguards offered to take the family back to shore but they were happy to paddle in themselves.”
