Residents living on the Penwerris estate in Falmouth will soon be able to get double the help with their benefit inquiries thanks to a £5,000 grant which will enable the Beacon Community Regeneration Partnership to employ “a second Jenny.”

At present former CAB manager Jenny Richards is at the Beacon Resource Office once a week to offer welfare and benefit advice, but the search is now on for a second benefits support worker to work alongside her four hours a week after the Church Urban Fund came up trumps with funding.

Father Mark Mesley, of Penwerris Church, had suggested applying for the grant and with help from Transformation Cornwall, the BCRP’s project coordinator, Grenville Chappel was successful in drawing down £5,000.

“The funding means we can have a ‘second Jenny’ who Jenny will train up to modern day standards, but we really need somebody who has already got knowledge and understanding of welfare benefits, maybe an ex-CAB worker or someone with that kind of knowledge,” said Grenville.

The two advice workers will cost the BCRP £6,900 a year and it is waiting to hear if a second application for a further £1,900 grant has been successful. If not, the partnership will pay the extra needed from its own funds.

The second support worker will be required to put in four hours on a Thursday morning and anyone who |would like to learn more about the post, or apply for it, should call 01326 212784 or pop into the Beacon Resource Centre in Grenville Road.
