Around 250 competitors came to show off their best gardening and cookery on Sunday for St Keverne Garden Society’s summer show.

Categories included the well entered tomato plant and runner bean competitions, as well as stiff rivalries between pasty, jam and cake bakers, who all sought to create the tastiest treats they could.

Marilyn Hebbron, the secretary at the event, said there was a good variety of products being shown off, including floral art and paintings, which maintained last year’s impressive diversity of skill.

She added that more photographs and paintings were entered than ever before, although the show saw a decrease in the amount of flower and vegetable entries compared to last time.

This could be partially due to the hot early summer that Cornwall encountered, confusing the plants into maturing too quickly and therefore not being at their peak performance when the show finally came around.

This didn’t put off the talented winners though, as some entries successfully sprouted above the rest in their specialist categories.

Standout figures included Gerald Townsend, who won the renowned “Gardener’s Society Cup”, and Mandy Pound who was congratulated by Mrs Hebbron personally as being “magnificent” due to her victory in the vegetable and flowers category.

Mrs Pound managed to accumulate the most points in the show, taking home a trophy for the feat.
