Year 11 students at Mullion School took flight yesterday, collecting their GCSE results before heading out in the wider world.

It was the turn of Flight 33 - so referred to in recognition of the school's symbol of an arctic tern - to collect their results before continuing their education in sixth forms or taking up apprenticeships across the county.

Amid scenes of much rejoicing, 75 per cent of the pupils achieved five or more GCSE passes at grades A* to C, with 55 per cent of students passing five or more at A* to C including the all-important English and maths exams.

Top awards went to Jess Thomson who achieved ten A*s and one A grade pass, Tegan Pascoe who gained four A*s and six A grades and George McMinn who gained four A*s, two As and one grade B.

There were also celebrations for Frank Frayne who gained three A*s and five A grades, Imogen Penry and Phoebe Jourdan who both gained three A*s, six As and two B grades, and Ashling Williams who gained three A*s, six As and one grade C pass.

Departments that achieved an 80 per cent or higher pass rate for their students were: English literature, maths, biology, physics, chemistry, art and design, catering, food technology, resistant materials, Spanish, geography, religious education, work related learning, dance, drama and music.

Retiring headteacher Mike Sandford, overseeing his last results day, said: “We have had some outstanding individual and departmental results this year.

“We always say that we want our pupils to be happy, to take up some of the great opportunities that the staff provide for our students, and to achieve their potential.

“I would like to thank all the staff and parents for the hard work that they have put in supporting these pupils during their time with us. We look forward to hearing about their continued progress in the years to come.”
