Falmouth councillors will have their chance to comment on plans to create a 4 star leisure resort taking in the site of the former fire ravaged Falmouth Beach Hotel, when the plans for the £25 million investment go before them on Monday.

The ambitious scheme, which also takes in the St Michael’s Hotel and Spa, neighbouring houses and a former pub, has already received wide spread support from the local community since they were first revealed in June.

Nigel Carpenter, who now owns the entire site, has a vision which includes creating a spa and wellness leisure resort which will include 75 residential apartments, 56 of them contained within a new building resembling an ocean going liner, 85 hotel bedrooms and suites, seven eco lodges, three restaurants and bars, a shop and a destination spa and expanded health club.

While safeguarding 110 existing obs, the proposed development would also create at least 70 new jobs and with a new entrance from Cliff Road, it would alleviate parking and traffic problems in Stracey Road.

After making presentations to various local organisations, including the town council, Cornwall Council planners, Falmouth and District Hotels’ Association (FDHA) and the Falmouth Bay Residents’ Association (FBRA), amendments have been made, such as a reduction in the number of eco lodges and the addition of a grass roof on the liner building, but the essence of the project remains the same.

Although the plans have only just been officially lodged with Cornwall Council, marking the start of the formal consultation period, several individuals and organisations have already made their thoughts known.

The Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) said: “Wonderfully ambitious. Really looking forward to the additional amenities for the town.”

Secretary of the FDHA said: “I love it. I think this will be a great asset to the seafront and to Falmouth as a whole. Well done Nigel and team. Exciting times ahead.”

Several members of FBRA have voiced their opinions. One who lives in Boscawen Road said: “This is a brave and exciting proposal.

“I believe that Nigel Carpenter does have the best interest of the area at heart and proved this in what he has done with the present St Michael’s Hotel.

“Please take light and noise pollution very seriously.”

Another from Melvill Court said: “Any improvement to the seafront is welcome. Would there be advantageous cost reduced breaks for local residents when complete/upon opening?

“Look forward to enjoying the ‘resort’ in the near future.”

Falmouth Town Council’s planning committee will debate the proposals when it meets at 6pm on Monday.

The final decision lies with Cornwall Council and if granted permission, initial work will begin this winter with the main construction work starting in November 2015.
