Two teenagers have fulfilled their dream of sailing on a Tall Ship after winning places on board the Kapitan Borchardt.

Steph Lenney, 16, daughter of Falmouth and Helston police inspector Steve Lenney, and Joseph Nickless, an administrative assistant at Cornwall Council, were both excited at the prospect of living and working on board the ship as it raced to the Isle of Wight and then cruises into Royal Greenwich.

For Steph, who is about to start her A level studies at Truro College, the chance to join the ship came after she lost out on a place at a camp in Gibraltar with the air cadets.

A corporal with the Falmouth Air Cadets, Steph has some experience sailing mirror dinghies at Restronguet, but admits she has done nothing to this scale.

“They will train us as we go,” she said. “We will be doing a bit of everything, but I do hope I get to climb a mast.”

Joseph, 19 and originally from Manchester, said: “I’m really looking forward to it. I am going to miss the main party (in Greenwich) though as I have to come back on September 6 by train.”
