Nationally acclaimed award winning jazz flautist Gareth Lockrane will be making a rare journey down to the Cornwall next Friday (September 12) to play a prestigious concert with the Helston School Jazz Orchestra at its annual leaver’s concert.

Gareth Lockrane started playing at the age of 14 after discovering Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans and Stan Getz in his dad’s record collection as well as great blues-rock guitarists of the 60s and 70s - Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy.

He formed Gareth Lockrane’s Grooveyard in 2002 and their last album The Strut won Mojo music magazines jazz album of the year in 2012.

Helston School Jazz Orchestra includes players aged from 14-18 and is also acclaimed as one of the top youth jazz orchestras in the country.

“This a massive tribute to the talents of the young people that they can attract such a fantastic guest to come and play with them,” said musical director Clive King.

The concert takes place in Helston School main hall. Tickets are £7.50 or £25 for a table of four with pasties and a bar. Tickets are available from Christophers Estate Agents.
