Members of the Glasney Greenspace Regeneration Project in Penryn took a day off from digging and litter picking to hold their first ever fun day in the valley.

Following a rainy start, the sun shone down on activities including face painting, a tug of war, and under-16s bike track trials, and there was also food and drink from Penryn’s Shellfish Pig and Rebel Brewing Company.

Pip Carlton-Barnes, group secretary and event organiser, said: “The under-16’s free track trials were well attended and saw young people of all riding abilities competing for the ‘GGSRP Track’ trophy.

Floyd Radcliffe, Tom Bell and Alex Piper achieved the highest places and were presented with trophies by Reuben Slater of Penryn based Cycle Solutions.

As well as all the other free activities, there was an opportunity to throw wet sponges at Penryn Mayor Gill Grant and councillor David Garwood, who found themselves in the historic stocks which had been loaned by the town council.

Children could pay to go on the bouncy castle, and overall the day raised £86.70 in donations.

Pip added: “We were delighted by the support our first fun day received and we are already planning our next track day.

“It was really rewarding to see not just the level of people there but also the different local businesses that came along and volunteered time and donations on the day.

“We were disappointed the bubble football company pulled out at the last minute but this didn’t seem to upset anyone.

“We hope to learn from and build on the day’s success by holding another great fun day next year.”
