A Penryn man jailed after being caught driving while banned for three years, said others in the vehicle could not take the wheel as they had been drinking or taking illegal substances.

Gregory May, aged 33, of Treluswell Vean, Penryn, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance at Penryn on June 17.

Alison May, for the CPS, said he was disqualified for three years in May.

Police officers had seen him driving a Transit van in Penryn on June 17 and recognised him.

He told officers that other people in the vehicle were unable to drive because they had been drinking and taking pain killers and illegal substances.

May, who had previous convictions, was banned for 12 months to run concurrently with his present ban.
