Pet dogs were on their best behaviour on Sunday as the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek hosted its fourth fun family dog show.
The event was held in aid of the Merlin’s Magic Wand, a worldwide charity for children aiming to provide magical experiences for those who are seriously ill, disabled or disadvantaged.
Thirty-six dogs were entered in the show and there were 15 classes, including best puppy, best veteran and dog most like its owner. All first prize contestants then competed for the coveted Best in Show cup. Ten-month-old Peggy, from Falmouth, a wire-haired pointer cross, took the top prize.
The dog that won “best rescue” was a black Labrador named Merlin. From a broken home, he was neglected, was unable to socialise with other dogs and had under developed muscles, but thanks to the loving home given by the Coombs family, he is now a happy and healthy dog that socialised with other dogs at the show.
Show organiser and operations manager at the sanctuary, Eileen Keeling, said: “A lovely day was had by all, for a great cause. It was wonderful to see such well loved and well looked after dogs. It was also incredible to see such a variety of dogs that took part, from Czechoslovakian wolfdogs to Pomeranians.”
“The Sanctuary would like to thank Gweek Village Hall for putting on refreshments and additional thanks to Jackie Alway who judged the event.”
