There was a World War One theme running through Porkellis Village Produce & Craft Show on Saturday.

The centenary of the outbreak of the war influenced many of the sections in the village’s 35th annual show, with classes for knitted socks in handicraft, ‘1916 trench cake’ in home produce, remembrance themed floral art, and poppies in the form of collages and paintings in the art and children’s sections.

A total of 707 entries were exhibited this year – slightly down on last year’s “exceptional” numbers, largely due to a decrease in the vegetables and flowers being entered, but still around average for the show.

Jenny Hosking, one of the show secretaries along with Sue Tomlin, said: “We had quite a few new people entering this year, so that was good.”

A new section for this year was for eggs and Mrs Hosking said she was “delighted” that this attracted 30 entries.

She thanked long-standing villager David Gray for opening the event and his daughter Sara Gray for presenting the prizes, and Wendron Band who attended during the afternoon.

An auction at the Star Inn that evening raised more than £400 under the direction of auctioneer Phil Care, half of which will go to Porkellis Village Hall and half to the show funds.

It included £35 made by the sale of a wooden bowl, made by Gary Finnemore, which won best exhibit in the show.

Mrs Hosking said: “A big thank you to all who helped put the show together, from the committee to the villagers who helped to set up and dismantle the staging; also the ladies serving tea, coffee and cakes.”
