Young farmers are hoping to reap the rewards of another successful ploughing match held on Saturday.

Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers Club organises the event each year to raise money for its chosen charity, which this year is the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.

The event consisted of many different elements, with several different competitions available to enter.

The ploughing consisted of each competitor being given a plot that they had to plough, with marks given for both the opening and closing of a plot, along with straightness, depth and overall tidiness of the plot.

The classes ranged through several modern and vintage classes of tractor as well as a category for the ladies. In total, the club had around 40 entries for the ploughing which, along with the good weather, helped to pull in a large crowd.

In the domestic tent, there were competitions for cooking, photography, handicrafts, flower arranging and farm produce, and also several classes for under 16s.

Another of the major events to take place on the day was the tractor pull, which proved by far to be one of the most popular events of the day.

This year around 45 tractors entered the four classes. The competition consisted of two tractors racing up a hill carrying a trailer full of sand weighing approximately 16 tonnes.

After the presentation of prizes for the day’s activities, an auction and pig roast was held. This was followed by clay pigeon shooting and sheaf pitching competitions and an evening disco.

Frances Hosken, who with Rachel Benney, organised the event, said: “It went really well and was really busy. For the tractor pull the field was absolutely packed. We had a lot of entries in the domestic section, which I was really pleased about and 38 ploughing plots, which was good as well.”

Although it is too soon to say how much was raised, Frances said she was “really pleased” with the total, adding: “It’s looking like it’s going to be a nice amount.”

This year’s event was held on three farms – John Curtis hosted the ploughing, Kevin Sawle hosted the marquee and Angela and Leslie Wallis hosted the tractor pull. Frances thanked all of them for their support, adding: “Thanks must go to everyone who entered. We couldn’t have done it without them. They make the day what it is.”
