The League of Friends of Helston Community Hospital raised £500 at its recent cheese and wine evening, when the group celebrated its 60th birthday and enjoyed a talk by Martin Matthews.

A further £700 at least was raised by a group of nurses who embarked on a sponsored walk. This money will go towards special cushions for patients and the nurses now plan to make the walk an annual event.

The Friends’ next fundraiser will be a 1940s’ dance at the Godolphin Club from 7pm on November 21 which will commemorate 100 years since the start of World War One. Fancy dress is optional and there will be a band playing 1940s music and some sing along fun with Mrs Penny Whittle’s singers and a raffle.

Tickets cost £5 and can be bought from Sandy Bartlett on 01326 562283, Moira Dixon on 01326 562644 and will be available on the door.

Weather permitting, on November 4 some trees will be planted to celebrate the Friends’ anniversary and to commemorate the start of WWI and some committee members and friends will be weeding and pruning in the Sensory garden.

Finally, the Friends’ AGM will take place at 2pm on November 24 when the guest speaker will be Sandra Wilderspin who, for many years, was head teacher of a school in Katmandu.
