Two defibrillators, both of which will be available to use 24 hours a day, purchased by the Mike Edwards Fund are now in position at Porthleven.

One of the defibrillators is outside Boots the Chemist in Shute Lane and the second is outside the Atlantic Inn on Peverell Terrace.

“Mike would have been so proud” said his widow, Joyce, who set up the fund. “We hope the defibrillators will never be needed, but if someone does have a heart attack, they are here to help save lives.

You phone for an ambulance and the operator tells you the code to unlock the cabinet, and the machine will talk you through whatever you have to do next.”

Meanwhile fundraising is still going strong and donations are flooding in, with plans for several more defibrillators throughout the town.

“We are half-way to buying the third and anyone who would like to make a donation or take free training in the combined use of CPR (chest compressions) and the defibrillator should get in touch, particularly if there is someone in the family who is vulnerable, said Joyce.

Adding:“We would like everyone to be aware of this wonderful facility we now have.”

Free training sessions for those who live or work in Porthleven are in progress at the Apostolic Church in Thomas Street.

The next one takes place at 7-9pm on Monday, October 6. All those who take part in the training receive a certificate from Helston HeartStart and a window sticker from the Mike Edwards Fund.

Donations should be sent to C/O Joyce Edwards, Priory Cottage, Prospect Place, Shute Lane, Porthleven TR13 9DS, with cheques made out to The Mike Edwards Fund).
