Travellers who are occupying the Quarry car park in Falmouth have agreed to a request to leave by Monday.

The group, who are reported to be of Irish descent, were served with a notice to leave by Cornwall Council, and are "fully co-operating" with those plans.

Hanna Toms, Cornwall Councillor for Penwerris ward, which includes the Quarry site, said: "I have spoken to the police and the council's gypsys and traveller liaison , and they have been served a notice to move at the weekend.

"Police say they have been no trouble, the site is very clean and they are fully co-operating with plans to leave at the weekend, and are planning to leave the site tidy.

"Phil Eaton, the gypsy and traveller liaison, has been dealing with them as they move around Cornwall... and says they have been very helpful and co-operative.

"The notice they have been served means they could be taken to court if they have not moved by Monday."

The council had previously issued a statement regarding the encampment, saying it was "required to achieve a balance between respecting the rights of the settled community and the rights of gypsies and travellers", and that it had to assess these duties "in terms of education, children and homelessness legislation."
