Organisations all over Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding area did their bit for the fight against cancer when they took part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning organised by Macmillan Cancer Support.

As part of the event, groups all over the country got together for a cuppa to beat cancer, with all donations going to the charity, and well over £1,000 was raised locally.

One event in Penryn Town Hall made well over £100, with contributions still coming in and the winners of several games including 'guess the coffee beans in the jar' and 'guess the hundreds and thousands on the cake' still ongoing.

Organiser Sue Wright thanked her husband Wayne and daughter Laura for their help, and said: “People came in drips and drabs, it was a good steady afternoon.”

Janet Smith also led a team of volunteers at the Memorial Hall in Mawnan Smith.

Ruth Smith and Shirley Denyer thanked all their helpers and the people who bought coffee and cakes at their coffee morning in Mabe Community Hall, which raised around £560.

Ruth said: “We weren't many to start with, but it went really well. It's amazing what you can do in two hours.”

The owner of Falmouth Pitch and Putt, Keith Rashleigh, said the company is “very pleased” with an event that raised £608 by selling tea, cakes, and pies, along with a raffle and a book sale.

At the Norway Inn in Perranarworthal, an event held the day before the official coffee morning raised £1,015, and manager Rodney Gill said: ““I thought if we held it the day before, it would enable more people to come and join us at the Norway, and then attend another Macmillan event the following day if they wanted.

“I am delighted that this paid off and we raised such a fantastic amount.”
