Just days after students were slapped with an ASBO warning over loud parties, representatives from the police, Cornwall Council and the universities have been out and about in Falmouth encouraging all residents to be good neighbours.

The pre-planned community awareness day saw agencies in Falmouth and Penryn join forces for the third consecutive year as students settle in at the beginning of the new academic term.

Representatives from Cornwall Council’s public protection, community safety and anti-social behaviour teams, together with colleagues from Falmouth Town Council, the Devon & Cornwall Police neighbourhood team, representatives from Falmouth University and the University of Exeter and members from the Falmouth University and University of Exeter Students’ Union (FXU) visited over 300 properties in the town to offer advice to residents, including the student population.

The focus was on a variety of topics including personal safety, waste collection, noise, anti-social behaviour and fire safety.

A spokesman said that the community awareness day was well received by the residents and the overall feeling of the day was that “on the whole”, the students “integrate well into the community with minimal disruption”.

Roger Auster, FXU President said: “It was exceptionally positive to be part of such a great initiative and very rewarding to see just how much the students and wider local community are merging into one entity.” Adding that the students they met seemed keen to be part of Falmouth town and the local residents were “welcoming the students openly.”
