It is not every day you find an entire hill up for sale – but that is exactly what is happening to one of the Helston’s area’s most prominent landmarks.

Tregonning Hill, near Ashton, has been put on the market, with offers invited.

In the region of 28.349 hectares (70.05 acres) or thereabouts, there is the option to purchase an additional one hectare (2.46 acres), all with the freehold.

The land is accessed by a lane on the minor road from Ashton to Godolphin opposite Balwest Chapel.

With views over Mounts Bay, the Lizard and beyond, Tregonning Hill is the highest summit in the area. There is evidence of the fort of Castle Pencaire and a Celtic stronghold from circa 250 BC.

During the Napoleonic |Wars there was a beacon at |the hill and in case of a |French landing, the beacon |was to be lit as a signal to the British Fleet.

China clay was quarried there from the 1700s until the early 20th Century, and in the latter part of the 19th Century a brick making business was started with evidence of an old stone kiln still visible.

Also present is Germoe War Memorial, although this is not part of the sale having been gifted to the parish.

The hill is now an important environmental area with rare plants present, including ling and bell heathers.

Part of the hill is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
