Porthleven is pushing forward with plans to get its own youth worker.

This would be an employee of the town council, who would work with young people in the port and put on activities.

The idea was raised at the last meeting of members, with councillor Andy Wallis, who sits on both the town and Cornwall councils, saying: “I’m a firm believer of youth work. The greater picture out there with Cornwall Council and youth services is changing. It’s looking at a more community based youth working ethos.

“Porthleven is a large enough settlement to have its own youth support worker.”

He said that nine hours per week, split into three-hour sessions three times a week, would only cost the council £2,500 a year.

He stressed: “This is very early stages and there are some more details to go into. I think we’ll be looking at setting up our own youth worker in the New Year.”

Mr Wallis asked for the town council’s initial support for the scheme, adding that this would not tie them into a decision and they could withdraw support if they were not happy after hearing more information.

Councillor Alan Jorgensen described it as a “fantastic idea”, saying that youth work was an aspect of the neighbourhood plan currently being put together by a project group that he led.

“I think young people are the future of our community and it’s important that we, as the town council, invest in them,” he added.

Mayor Daniel Williams agreed, along with other members, to support the proposal in principle so that the project can be worked on further.

Helston Town Council is looking at a similar post and it was suggested that the two councils could work alongside each other, so that there was youth work going on in the area almost every night of the week.
