Penryn’s Saturday Club will hope to be racing into poll position after being selected to receive two cars from the Falmouth Cop Car Project.

The youth group, based at The Space at Penryn Rugby Club, will be given one ‘Formula Goblin’ car, for children aged nine to 11, and one ‘Formula 24’ car for those aged 12-16, and will be looking for budding mechanics and drivers to help build and race them.

The club, which celebrates its eighth birthday this year, will be taking the cars to the regional heats when race season starts, and hopes to continue on to race around the country.

Victor Tullin, chairman of The Space, said: “The ethos of our new project will be to engage, encourage and support young people in our community as they develop practical and social skills. To provide a safe place to learn, share thoughts and express ideas. To have a sense of ownership and belonging to a community group where difficulties and problems are challenged together and positive outcomes are achieved and celebrated.

"If it was not for the dedication and commitment of our unpaid volunteers over these past eight years we would not be the great Saturday club we are today"

He added: “I have drawn the short straw and have been sending out letters to local companies and support groups inviting their support with both financial and for equipment to attempt to ensure the success of this new project within the local community of Penryn.

“The people that will benefit from your support are the children from our local community. In return for support we can offer things like company logos being used over the cars even a car being completely transformed to the same livery as your own company.”

Any children or volunteers that might be interested in building, developing and racing these cars can visit the group on Saturday mornings from 10am to 12noon, for more information email thespacepenryn@googlemail.com or call Victor on 01326 373289 or 07880 986983.
