Picture the scene: your wedding day has finally arrived, and as you exit the car / horse and carriage / novelty fire engine in your perfect white dress you have arrived at your dream venue of – the Guildhall?

That is certainly what members of Helston Town Council think could one day be a reality, after agreeing to look into licensing the civic building in more detail.

It was at the suggestion of councillor Gillian Geer, who asked members to think about using the Guildhall for wedding services and receptions.

She admitted: “I know it seems a bit unlikely.” But she pointed out that council chamber was about to be redecorated and it could be the perfect opportunity to consider different uses in the future when deciding on the decor.

Referring to the latest round of budget cuts at Cornwall Council, Mrs Geer added: “If the One Stop Shop bites the dust, there would be nowhere in Helston where people could have a civil wedding.”

Of course the Guildhall comes with its own historic features – something that many brides love.

The council chamber itself used to be a court back in the day. Naturally this led to much hilarity at the comparisons that could be drawn with weddings, with mayor Mike Thomas joking: “I can just see it, with the bride sitting in the dock...”

The cost of licensing the building for weddings would be £1,450 a year, although Mrs Geer pointed out this should soon be covered by the charge, adding: “Money is not that easy to find but this is one event in people’s lives where they seem very happy to spend it.”

It was agreed to pass the idea onto the council’s amenities committee, to discuss the finer details.
