Parents and carers of pupils at St Mary’s School in Falmouth were invited in to join their youngsters for breakfast last week as part of its “Feed and Read” initiative.

Being held as part of the school’s book week celebrations, the aim is to encourage parents to take an added interest in their child’s reading and literacy skills in general. A selection of books are available for families to read together while enjoying a breakfast of cereal, bacon rolls or toast.

Head teacher, Jacqui Scarborough, said: “It is the first time we have tried this. As we have in-house kitchen provision now it’s a lot easier to try things like this. If it’s successful we are hoping to run a breakfast club in the spring term.”

The school’s literacy coordinator, Sarah Shailes, added: “We want to encourage children to read and to build on a pleasure for reading. We have some book related activities planned, books on the tables and the library is there if they want to use it.

“The children can also design their own book mark, make their own zig zag book and the older children can learn how to make a book.”

As part of the book week celebrations, the children will be dressed up on Wednesday as their favourite book characters and were visited by author Luke Temple.
