Temporary repairs are to be carried out on the ramps of Falmouth’s skate park after the facility was basically condemned by an insurance assessor.

Falmouth councillors were told that even with the repairs, the ramps have only been given a life span of between six and 12 months, bringing an extra urgency to talks currently taking place between the town council and Cornwall Council.

Falmouth Town Council wants to take over the freehold of the whole site off Dracaena Avenue, and has plans to redevelop it in its entirety. Those plans include a new skatepark, but fundraising for this has stalled while the two councils negotiate.

Town clerk, Mark Williams, said: “We cannot apply for external funding because no-one is going to give any funding to a site you only have a six year lease on.”

Councillor Candy Atherton added that the skatepark will have to be closed at some point as the planned new facility will not be in place within a year. “The long term plans for the site are fantastic and will enhance the site and the skatepark, but there will be a gap and there’s nothing we can about that,” she said.
