Falmouth councillors have agreed to award the town’s rugby club its second grant in three months, but have encouraged officials to liaise and work together in the future or risk being turned down.

In July, the council agreed to award Falmouth Rugby Club £500 towards next February’s Under 12s rugby tour and then last week councillors were faced with a request for help towards the cost of sending the Under 14s section to the Bournemouth and Poole Rugby Festival.

It is anticipated the trip next April for 20 boys will cost around £3,000 and Mick Stevens from the club attended a meeting of the council’s finance and general purposes committee last week to ask for whatever amount members saw fit. He said the boys had already raised £300 themselves by washing cars.

In his application, Mr Stevens had said: “As a parent and someone passionate about my community, town and sport, I feel that any opportunity to bind the youth of our town to our town should be taken.

“As with all things, the costs of attempting to undertake such a venture as this have spiralled and in wanting to include all the lads, whatever their circumstances, we have to seek outside assistance.”

It was councillor Steve Eva who first voiced a concern about contributing towards the costs. “Not a month ago someone from the same club came in. If we give a grant to everyone going on tour it would set a precedent we cannot afford.”

Councillor Alan Jewell added: “How many teams are there at the club? I think one a year for each club would be enough.”

Councillor Rowenna Brock, however, disagreed. “I think both rugby clubs in the local area are important and worthwhile and these trips are good for the local boys. I think £3,000 is a little high, but I’d be happy to give some sort of grant.”

Councillor Trish Minson added: “Perhaps we could make it clear to the rugby club that multiple applications are not going to be considered in the future and perhaps they could liaise.”

The committee eventually agreed to award a grant of £250.
