A film which will tell the stories of the Falmouth men who perished during World War I has received financial backing from the town council.

Louis Allen, of the Institute of Cornish Studies based at the Penryn Campus, had applied to Falmouth Town Council for £700 towards the £3,000 cost of producing the film, which will be premiered in the town as soon as it is completed.

He told councillors that £1,500 had been raised through CrowdFunder and a further £750 had been contributed by those directly involved with the project.

He said: “The film, Falmouth and the Great War, is specifically related to the 244 names on the war memorial in Kimberley Park. The film will show local people the impact of the war on Falmouth. The film will be an important resource for local people.”

At last week’s meeting, councillors were told: “We are hoping to hold a small premier somewhere in Falmouth – The Poly came to mind. There are some incredible stories and everyone in Falmouth could have the opportunity to come and see them.”

Mayor John Body said: “I think this is a marvellous story that has to be told and kept for the future. We are in danger of losing them and I have no hesitation in recommending the £700.”

The committee unanimously agreed and received an assurance that the film, being created by students and academics at Falmouth and Exeter universities, will be made available on the council’s website.
