This year’s Porthleven Lifeboat Day made a profit of more than £3,000 – despite being cancelled.

Although a bad weather forecast put an end to the day’s events before they had even begun, organisers still managed to make a profit having previously sold raffle tickets.

Added to the money from programme sponsorship and donations, an auction and stallholders’ fees, this amounted to £3,155.52 after expenses – described as “almost unbelievable for a cancelled event.”

Jean Howard, press officer for Porthleven and District RNLI, said: “We are already making plans for next year, the date being Sunday, August 9, when we hope the weather will be kinder to us.

“It was the first time a cancellation in nearly 40 years has been necessary and hope it will be the last.”

The branch continued its fundraising recently with a quiz night at the Queen’s Arms, Breage.

Together with a raffle, the evening raised £157.40 for the RNLI.

Mrs Howard thanked the “good number of people” who attended the evening, as well as Ian Davis and Samantha and Don Parker for allowing the branch to use the pub as a venue.

Another quiz evening will be held at the Queen’s Arms on Wednesday, November 19, with people asked to arrive at 8pm for an 8.30pm start.

The funds raised by the branch are designated to go to Penlee Lifeboat Station, which covers West Cornwall.
