Falmouth's MP has vowed to press for "everything possible to be done to keep local people safe", after concerns over the arrival of ships from Ebola striken West Africa.

Sarah Newton says that crew members will be closely questioned and that she is pressing for "robust measures to be taken".

Mrs Newton said: "I am keenly aware of how concerned, local residents are about the arrival of the ship from West Africa into the Port of Falmouth in light of the ongoing Ebola crisis.

"I have taken these concerns to the very highest levels and have met with the Public Health Minister and officials from Public Health England as well as the Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies to press for robust measures to be taken.

"I have been assured that Public Health England are working closely with Cornwall Port Health Authority and the NHS to prepare for the arrival of the ship.

"Before arriving in port, crew members will be closely questioned about their country of origin, any possible contact with Ebola and they will, as appropriate, have their temperatures taken and relevant actions will be taken Public Health England emphasise that, unless an individual has symptoms, and in particular diarrhoea, vomiting or bleeding as a result of their Ebola infection they are not a risk to others.

"I will continue to press for everything possible to be done to keep local people safe."
