An RNAS Culdrose worker from Falmouth has been recognised for 20 years of dedicated service with a special Captain’s Award.

Peter Cole was described as a “loyal servant” and “dedicated and generous worker” when he received his certificate from Captain Mark Garrett, commanding officer of the Helston naval base.

Over the last two decades Mr Cole has been employed in a number of roles across the air station. For the past 14 years he has worked in the station’s physical training department, acting as essential continuity for a multitude of physical training instructors and customers.

He was described as showing “extraordinary levels of initiative, flexibility and trust”, with his basic job description “merely the start of his responsibilities” as he found tasks that would otherwise just not be done.

Chief PTI Lee Herron said: “The Culdrose gym, arguably one of the best across Defence, is almost entirely down to his hard work.

“In addition to his experience in the administration side of things and his understanding of command’s intent, means that sportscentre membership is not only carefully managed, but ensure all the facilities are available to as many people and for as long as possible.”

Whilst employed primarily as a storeman, he has been an “invaluable asset” during manpower shortages when he has stepped in to provide guidance.

His advice is sought from every level and it is said he never shirks a difficult decision.

Captain Garratt said: “Mr Cole is a fine example to those around him. His personal commitment, dedication and determination have contributed directly to the physical development of a generation of RNAS Culdrose personnel.

“For his sterling efforts, and for his overall contribution to HMS Seahawk and the PT department, I am delighted to recognise Mr Cole with this award.”
