Helston's long association with brewing is well known, but the history of Helston Brewery has not previously been told.

Many people are unaware that the Ellis family, who started the Hayle Brewery, also developed the Helston Brewery in the nineteenth century. Charlotte MacKenzie, a freelance historical researcher has been studying the subject, and on Thursday, November 13, will be giving an illustrated talk at Helston Museum.

It promises to be a fascinating tale, with more than a hint of skulduggery. Among the facts uncovered are that in August 1805 Christopher Wallis recorded that a “Supernumery Excise Officer had visited the brewery at Helston AGAIN, this time leaving with a sample of powder used as a colourant.”

The talk starts at 7pm, tickets are £3 on the door, £2 to members of Para HenHellys, the museum’s supporters group. Tea and coffee will be available.
